Do I need musical experience to audition?
No. Vox members range from people who haven’t sung in decades to professional musicians.
If you enjoy singing and can commit to weekly rehearsals, we want to hear you!
Do I need to prepare anything for the audition?
No. Just show up ready to sing.
The audition takes only a few minutes and consists of a few short exercises to assess your vocal range and comfort. You’ll audition privately with our Artistic Director, Jeremy Nabors — not in front of the other auditionees.
What should I wear or bring?
Just yourself. Whatever’s comfortable.
When and where are auditions held?
Auditions are held annually, typically in late August or early September, at Yates Baptist Church in Durham. Current audition dates are posted on our Join Vox page.
How old do I need to be?
Members must be at least 18.
How often does Vox rehearse?
We rehearse weekly, typically Tuesday evenings from 7:00–8:30 pm at Yates Baptist Church, with occasional Thursday rehearsals and additional sectional rehearsals as concerts approach. Members are expected to attend at least 75% of rehearsals.
Are there dues?
Yes. Dues are $50 per semester or $100 per year, and support paid staff (Artistic Director and Accompanist), sheet music, recordings, and honoraria to Yates Baptist Church for the use of their space.
Dues can be paid by check to the Board Treasurer or online via the PayPal link on our Donate page — indicate “Dues” and the semester in the payment notes.
If dues would be a barrier to joining, please reach out to the Board President. The Board doesn’t provide dues waivers directly, but members have historically sponsored one another, and we’d rather find a way than lose a singer.
Is there a uniform?
Yes. Concert attire is a purple Vox performance shirt, dress black slacks, and dress black shoes. New members purchase the performance shirt at cost (approximately $35, one-time). Shirt ordering is coordinated ahead of your first concert.
